John Hughes John Hughes, UMCA Managing Director & UltraCycling Editor
A personal trainer, certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and a United States Cycling Federation Sport Coach. He is a veteran of the Race Across America, the Furnace Creek 508 and Tour of North Texas RAAM qualifiers, Boston-Montreal-Boston, the Rocky Mountain 1200K and a five time veteran of Paris-Brest-Paris. He holds the Reno-Tucson and Oregon N-S records.
Marko Baloh

Marko Baloh, Contributing Editor, European Racing
In 2000, after 15 years of racing in the UCI European circuit Marko decided to follow his dream of finishing RAAM. He says that every season since then has been the best (so far). The highlight of 2005 was third place in inaugural Le Tour Direct. His RAAM 2005 was even more memorable, despite a DNF, thanks to his fantastic almost all-American crew. He is also a veteran of the Furnace Creek 508, Race across the Alps, UMCA 24h Championship in Iowa and a few other 24h races (Silberreiher Trophy, Kraftwerk Trophy). He holds the 12h outdoor track record and the fastest 200 miles. www.markobaloh.com.

Drew Clark

Drew Clark, UMCA Records Chair
Drew holds cross-state records in Illinois and Indiana and four-man team records across Indiana and Colorado. He was on the four-man team that set the RAAM age 60+ record in 2007 (since surpassed). He is a retired math teacher and served as a translator in the Army in Vietnam. He was elected to Colorado House of Representatives in 1992, but says he is recovering nicely.

Ken Bonner

Ken Bonner, Contributing Editor, Equipment
Bonner, 63 years old, is a retired child welfare policy manager for the Province of British Columbia. Bonner holds four UMCA records:

  • Vancouver, BC to Calgary, ALB, June, 1996 - 614 miles (39h 47m)
  • Calgary, ALB to Vancouver, BC, July, 2000 - 614 miles (40 h 01m)
  • Vancouver Island (S-N), June, 1995 - 312.1 miles (17h 01m)
  • Vancouver Island (S-N-S), June, 1995 - 624.3 miles (38h 41m)
Bonner has completed over 100,000 km of brevets & randonnees, including 23 - 1200k randonnees. In 2005 he rode four: Cascade 1200, Gold Rush 1200, Boston-Montreal-Boston and Last Chance 1200.

Dan Chew

Danny Chew, Contributing Editor, RAAM and Ultra Racing

John Lee Ellis John Lee Ellis, UMCA Mileage Challenge Chair
A veteran of RAAM, Paris-Brest-Paris, Boston-Montreal-Boston and the Last Chance 1200Ks, John has participated in the Mileage Chalenge for more than 15 years. In addition to directing the Mileage Challenge and Year-Rounder, John is the Regional Brevet Administrator for Colorado, the President of the UMCA and the Vice President of Randonneurs USA.

Michelle Grainger, Contributing Editor, Training
Grainger has been a coach and personal trainer for over 15 years. She earned her Elite Level Coaching License with USA Cycling, the highest level of coaching. She also holds certifications in strength and conditioning, nutrition and pre- and post-natal fitness She competed as a professional mountain bike racer for the last 20 years and is multi-time 24-hour mountain bike champion and set several course records at the Vail Ultra 100. She took third in the 1990 Race Across America. She contributes articles on training for road- and off-road events.
Nancy Guth

Nancy Guth, Contributing Editor, Ultra Racing
One of the most active women racers, Nancy has won the Ultracycling Cup Competition four successive years (2002-2005). She contributes her personal observations on each season's events and participants.

Jenny Hegmann. M.S., R.D., Contributing Editor, Nutrition
Hegmann is co-author of The Cyclist's Food Guide: Fueling for Distance (© 2005 Sports Nutrition Publishers) with Nancy Clark, MS, RD. Hegmann is a registered dietitian and long-distance cyclist. She lives and works in the greater Boston area.

Dan Kehlenbach Dan Kehlenbach, Contributing Editor, Training.
Dan is a Level 2 coach with USA cycling and strength and conditioning specialist certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He holds a Master's of Science degree in Sports Medicine. His research focused on injury prevention via strength training and conditioning for endurance athletes. As a cyclist, runner, and triathlete, Dan represented the U.S. Coast Guard in many events throughout his enlistment where he was a strength coach for the recruit training program. Dan lives in Anchorage, AK and enjoys cycling, running, kayaking, x/c skiing and the great outdoors!
Russ Loomis Russ Loomis, Contributing Editor, Year-Rounder.
Russ is 53 and has been interested in ultra riding since 1997 when he got hooked during his first brevet series. He completed BMB that same year and has since finished six. During the following years he has competed in the Mileage Challenge, UCC, 24 hour races, and QuadZilla, and has qualified for RAAM. Russ says: "All of this has had a powerful and positive effect on my life and so I wanted to introduce distance riding to others. I became a HUB leader for Western MA for this reason with the goal to introduce as many cyclists as I can to our sport."
George Thomas

George Thomas, Contributing Editor, RAAM and Ultra Racing
Thomas has raced RAAM six times (solo, tandem, two-person relay, and four person-relay. He's also raced the Midnight Sun, Furnace Creek,and Bicycle Across Missouri. George is director of the Race Across Oregon RAAM Qualifier. He offers commentary on the sport.

Janice Tower

Janice Tower, Contributing Editor, Training and Ultra Racing
Janice dabbles in a variety of ultra distance cycling disciplines. She has competed in 24-hour mountain bike races including the 24-Hour World Solo Championships, the Iditasport 350 and the Susitna 100 winter mountain bike races across Alaska, the Cape-Epic South Africa and the TransRockies mountain bike stage races, Paris-Brest-Paris, and the Fireweed 400 (RAAM Qualified). Janice coaches for Carmichael Training Systems and is a USA Cycling Level 2 coach. Janice is the director of Mighty Bikes, a mountain biking program for kids ages 8 to 18. Merry Vander Linden Merry Vander Linden, Contributing Photographer

Lulu Weschler, Contributing Editor
Weschler attended the First International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia Consensus Development Conference in Cape Town, South Africa in 2005 and is a coauthor of the Consensus Statement. A physical therapist and veteran of P-B-P and Furnace Creek, she contributes articles on prevention and treatment of injuries.
Sandy Whittlesey
Sandy Whittlesey, Contributing Editor, RAAM Qualifiers
Although new to ultradistance racing, Sandy brings the experience of 300,000 year-round miles, having obtained a driver's license 20 years after his first racing license. He rode his first 100K in fifth grade. In the 1990's, he was hooked on mapless 1500-mile solo rides. Presently he is focused on learning and improving for PBP and RAAM. At home in Massachusetts, Sandy promotes the Deerfield Dirt-Road Randonnée and is adding a double-century to the 2006 UCC. He has a PhD in exercise science and works as a self-employed technology consultant..
