Vision

In the November-December 2006 UltraCycling I described my vision for the sport of ultracycling and for the UMCA. That vision rests on this foundation:

  • Ultracycling is broadly defined, encompassing timed and untimed events ranging from 90 to 3,000 miles, ridden by solo and team riders
  • Ultracycling is international with riders participating in events around the world and the UMCA should serve all of these riders
  • The UMCA should provide accurate Information via UltraCycling magazine and this website
  • Within our broad definition of ultracycling we have five programs, each of which challenges endurance riders to excel in a different way:
    • Year-Rounder emphasizing consistency throughout the year.
    • Ultracycling Cup Competition to determine the best ultra racers of the season.
    • Cross-state and other records providing more racing opportunities.
    • Qualifying for RAAM as an end in itself and as a means toward solo RAAM.
    • Supporting and promoting RAAM and the RAAM qualifiers.
  • The UMCA provides infrastructure to serve the ultra community: information on this website, the calendar on this website, etc.
  • The UMCA is a flexible organization. We don't impose a set of rules on event organizers — each organizer knows the local racers and requirements far better than the UMCA does.
