Insight Race Across America
We are pleased to announce that Insight, a leading global direct marketer of name-brand computers, hardware and software has become the title sponsor of RAAM. The race will officially be renamed the Insight Race Across America starting in 2001.

"We are very excited to team up with RAAM to become the title sponsor of the Insight Race Across America," said Tim Crown, co-ceo and president of Insight. "Insight is a big backer of sports. This new sponsorship, along with our current sponsorship of college football's Insight.com Bowl, allows us to promote Insight while at the same time support the aspirations of some of the best athletes in the world."

Lon Haldeman and Susan Notorangelo will return as race directors for the Insight RAAM in 2001. Haldeman said that "The relationship with Insight is good for the future of the race. Entry fees can't cover all the basic race expenses; Insight's financial support will help to insure the future of RAAM."

The Insight RAAM will start in Portland, OR on Sunday, June 17 and follow Haldeman's 2000 route, finishing in Gulf Breeze, FL the week of June 24 - 29. RAAM will again have three major fields: solo and tandem riders, two-person teams and four-person teams. The two-person format was a big success in last year. Dwight Bishop said "Doing RAAM as a two person team is the most fun I have had in a long time."

Haldeman, John Marino and Michael Shermer founded RAAM in 1982 and jointly owned the race and the UMCA. This past summer, Marino and Shermer decided to liquidate their shares. Jim Pitre raced in RAAM 2000 and fell in love with the event. He recruited Kimo Seymour to help him purchase Marino and Shermer's shares and to continue the race.. Pitre has been actively working with Crown and Insight to also arrange financial sponsorship of the race. Pitre said "I'm excited that a young, growing company like Insight is enthusiastic about promoting the sport of cycling. Pitre will be racing again in RAAM 2001.

Haldeman won the inaugural race in 1982 and again in 1983. Notorangelo won in 1985 and 1989. Between them, they have competed in cross-country races 15 times. Haldeman and Notorangelo hold the mixed tandem transcontinental record and Haldeman, with Pete Penseyres, holds the men's tandem transcontinental record.

All RAAM riders must be UMCA members. How to Join the UMCA.
