Let's go!
Mike Trevino at the Nebraska-Iowa state line over the Missouri River.

Leaving the Iowa-Nebraska border at 6 a.m., Mike Trevino flew 273 miles across Iowa, arriving at the bridge across the Mississippi in time for an early dinner. RAAM racers routinely cruise through sub-12 hour double centuries in training. But Trevino clocked a sub-eight hour double on the hill course. He reported: "I anticipated hills on both sides of the state, but not 9,400 feet of climbing. I was surprised there was so much climbing. I felt pretty good throughout the ride. I tried to maintain an aggressive, but consistent HR."

Trevino crossed the state in 10 hours 36 minutes 59 seconds, averaging 25.7 mph. He broke Paul Black's excellent record of 13h 18m (20.45 mph).

Byron Rieper, the UMCA official, reported, "We enjoyed five mph tailwinds for the first 130 miles followed by 10 mph crosswinds for 130 miles and 10 miles of tailwinds at the end. 9000 feet of climbing." Rieper holds the Kansas W-E record.

The record attempt started on the Iowa highway 92 bridge across the Missouri river. "I rode back toward IA and stopped on the bridge at the state line sign. There was a light tailwind and a short descent to start off - what a great way to start. I managed to make all the stop lights out of Council Bluffs so there were no stops for the first several miles. We started at exactly 6:00 a.m. - Ironically weren't shooting for a specific start time."

Love the rollers!

"The ride was uneventful - no flat tires or mechanical issues. Traffic wasn't too bad and most drivers were considerate. There were only a couple sections of road construction and in one case the guy stopping traffic saw me coming and flipped his sign from 'Stop' to 'Slow', waving me through - I gave him a big 'thanks!' and continued on."

Trevino set the record on Monday, May 9, 2005. He followed Iowa 92 across the state and finished on the bridge over the Mississippi.

On June 19th Trevino, the RAAM '04 Rookie of the Year, and Juré Robic, the 2004 RAAM champ, will leave San Diego, racing for Atlantic City, NJ. Robic holds the UMCA 24-hour road record of 521.975 miles (21.75 mph) set last September. Both will be racing for the RAAM '05 victory and, with each other as motivation, both have a shot at Pete Penseyres' RAAM average speed record of 15.40 mph, which was set in 1986.
