North to South (2004)

"The ride was to train my crew for future RAAM qualifiers."
by Ed Mulheren

ultra cycling records

On May 15, 2004 I rode from the Virginia border to the South Carolina border, covering 153 miles in 9 hours 39 minutes. Most of the ride was into the wind, so my average speed was only 15.85 mph. Conditions were mostly sunny, 61 degrees at the start and 82 at the finish.

We started at 5:15 a.m. at the North Carolina border at MP 216 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, then headed southwest for 33 miles. I encountered several climbs on the Parkway before heading south on Route 18. After a good downhill portion I then climbed through the Brushy mountains. After passing through Wilkesboro I proceeded along Route 16 through Charlotte, then onto some side roads to where the ride finished on Route 160, Fort Mill, SC.

The purpose of the ride was for training of my crew for future RAAM qualifiers. This would be a short ride to get them used to following and providing aid along the course. The added complexity of setting a record during the ride just requires bringing along an official and having her complete the all-important paperwork. Sue and Christina Mulheren were the crew and the Official was Debbie Haslack.
