Bern-Bodensee-Bern (2002) by John Hughes ![]() The second annual Bern-Bodensee-Bern 600 km and RAAM qualifier was held July 6 in Switzerland. The course is 614 km with about 4,000 meters of climbing. The RAAM qualifying standard is to finish in 21 hours 15 minutes (equivalent to 425 miles in 24 hours). Four events were held simultaneously:
Daniel Wyss (CH) won the Elite Solo race and set a new record 19 hours 29 minutes, breaking his old record by six minutes. A month later, Wyss set a new 24-hour drafting record of 1,011 km at the Schoetz race. 26 men and one woman started the Elite race and 17 finished as well as one two-person relay team. Eight riders started in the RAAM Qualifier Division, leaving the line 15 minutes ahead of the field. Heiko Dietrich (D) won the RAAM division in 19:46. Alexander Gepp (A) was second in 21:08 and Andreas Bosch (CH) finished in 21:11, qualifying for RAAM with only four minutes to spare! Frank Dohm (D) finished in 25:40. The other four riders dropped out. Overall, 176 riders took part and 154 finished. This include seven military cyclists who rode fixed gear military bikes weighing 26 kg.
