Swiss Cycling Marathon
Wiedlisbach-Bodensee-Bern (2004)

by John Hughes

426 legs rode 90,000 kilometers at Wiedlisbach-Bodensee-Bern on July 2-3. The marathon includes four events:

  • 110 km fun tour Wiedlisbach-Berne-Wiedlisbach
  • 300 km of Wiedlisbach
  • 610 km Wiedlisbach-Lake of Constance-Berne
  • 720 km RAAM Qualifier

The randonneurs (first three events) started in light rain; by the time the seven riders started the non-drafting RAAM qualifier, the sky was clear. They raced 610 km from Wiedlisbach through the south Black Forest, along the Bodensee (Lake of Constance), by the Austrian Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein, back from there via Kerenzerberg and Sattelpass to Lucerne, Berne and again back to Wiedlisbach. The riders then finished the race with another loop of 110 km.

The youngest participant in the RAAM Qualifier, Xavier Zahno from Fribourg led from the start and finished with the excellent time of 24 hours and 47 minutes. Second was the Czech Jaroslav Senk over two hours back, closely followed by Manfred Pichler from Dietikon and Walter Blättler from Lucerne. The other three riders dropped.

Almost 100 randonneurs rode the 610 km, with four riders finishing in 19:47. Because of strong headwinds the last 250 km, they missed the course record by 40 minutes. The first two women finished in 27:30.

Four riders qualified for the Race Across America.
