Michael Brady Obituary

Michael Dwayne Brady of Columbia, MO died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at University Hospital and Clinics. He was 41. Brady was struck and killed by a pick-up while competing in the annual Bicycle Across Missouri race.

Brady was an avid cyclist, training seven days a week for ultramarathon cycling. Elaine Brady said her husband had ridden several BAM half tours. This was to be his first full tour. Outside of his family, she said, bicycling was his life.

In 1995, Brady and a friend organized a cycling event they titled the Ashley Challenge, a 100-mile race named for Brady's daughter, who was eight years old at the time. She rode the distance in less than nine hours.

In addition to his wife, Brady is survived by daughters Andrea, 21, and Ashley, 14.

Local cyclists remembered Brady as an intense and independent trainer.

"He's an ultramarathoner," said Mike Bowman, a mechanic for a Columbia bicycle shop. "He would often go 200 or more miles in a single day. "He was an extremely strong rider, a true athlete," he added.

In addition to cycling, he enjoyed motorcycles, hunting, target shooting and working out at the gym, his daughter, Andrea Brady, said. He also taught his passion for sports to children as a volunteer assistant coach for youth sports teams.

Donations may be sent to the Ashley and Andrea Brady College Fund, c/o Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., Columbia, MO, 65202.
