RAAM racers warm up with 8 new records

Davis 12- and 24-Hour Challenge

...new 162.5-mile day loop over Cobb Mountain

by John Hughes

Ultracycling Cup Competition for ultra riders of the season

The Davis 12/24, held on April 7, 2007, used a new 162.5-mile day loop over Cobb Mountain, and slowed a few racers down but there were many notable rides.

12-Hour
Graham Pollock was on-form to win with 221.7 miles. Joel Sothern, new to the Ultracycling Cup, took second with 214.3 miles. His 50+ age didn't slow him down! Steve Smead was third with 210.3 miles — on a fixed gear! Kent Mulkey took fourth with 199.3 miles. He will be racing on a two-person mixed team in RAAM. Tim Woudenberg set a men's 50+ recumbent record of 209.3 miles; Woudenberg is racing on a two-man recumbent team in RAAM. UMCA webmaster Mark Newsome had an excellent day with 179.5 miles. Del Scharffenberg set a very impressive record of 186.9 miles for men 60+. Sandy Earl is back racing again after a few years off the bike.

24-Hour
Nicole Honda turned in an excellent result: 354.5 miles. Honda is racing on a two-women team in RAAM. Multi-time RAAM veteran David Kees, racing in the age 50+ category, took top honors with 400.3 miles. Dan Crain, in the age 60+ category, was second overall with 387.3 miles. The four-man team Brothers from Sisters (OR) turned in an amazing 508.7 miles.

It was a great day for all the racers and volunteers. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this race wonderful: Diane Richter, A Caneman, Joaquin Feliciano, Barry Bolden, Graham Pollock, Anne Schneider, Larry Burdick, Marsha Johnson, Patsy Inouye, Mike Inouye, Dan Shadoan, Allan Hill and Lee Mitchell.
