Race Around Slovenia
European Ultracycling Championship

by John Hughes

Start of the Race Around Slovenia

The inaugural race around Slovenia or RAS was held on May 10th -12th, 2007, with the start and finish line in Postojna. Marko Baloh, Fredi Virag and Juré Robic came up with the idea and Andrej Berginc, Virag's crew chief from RAAM 2003, went to work organizing the race. Slovenia is too small to only go from one side to the other — Baloh holds the east-west record of 9 hours 34 minutes. Berginc embraced the idea of racing around Slovenia. The total length of the race is 1,146 km (712 miles) with almost 10,000 m of climbing.

The UMCA sanctioned the race as the 2007 European Ultracycling Championship — Juré Robic, ramping up for RAAM 2007, won the championship. RAS is also a RAAM qualifier — Christopher Strasser, Bojan Kos and Ales Luznar qualified for RAAM.
