Kevin Zelenka of Hot Springs, NM rallied to claim the Senior Male division title with his ride at the Cochise Classic in Arizona, by a count of 189.37 points to 187.35 for Pritchard. Pritchard claims the overall title because of the three-point rule, which states that only riders who complete an event worth at least three difficulty points are eligible for the overall title. Zelenka fell short in his attempt at the windy Furnace Creek 508. Pritchard also did Cochise and added about nine JMC points to his total by replacing a slower event (see notes), but it was not enough to hold off Zelenka for the division title. Zelenka also earned the most combined points in the 2001-2002 JMC.
Sam Baugh of Clinton, MO took third place with 168.26 points.
The UMCA instituted the 3-point rule so that, in order to win the overall JMC, a solo rider would have to complete a major ultra event, i.e., a RAAM qualifier or RAAM. In a terrific display of strength and competitiveness, 20 of the 53 solo riders completed a 3-point event. Although tandems are not eligible for the overall title, four pairs competed in the 2002 JMC, for a total of 61 participants, compared to 35 last year.

Guth persevered despite riding 470 miles but not finishing (and thus receiving no credit) for the title-qualifying Adirondack 540. She completed Furnace Creek in her first attempt to nail down the overall women's title as well as the Female 50-59 division, with 161.13 points. Nancy Pauw of Banff, Alberta, Canada finished first in the Senior Female division with 126.51 points while Rebecca Smith of Portland, OR followed Guth in the Female 50-59 division with 109.93 points.
Reed Finfrock of Springville, CA won the Male 50-59 division with 160.88 points, besting Sam Beal of Mountain View, CA (154.06 points) and William Schwarz of Kinderhook, NY (142.15 points). Although Finfrock could not be credited with completion of Denver-Aspen, due to his oversight in not getting his card signed at controls, it did not make a difference in the final placings, either for the division or overall.
Doug Slack of Green Oaks, IL and Roberta Fischer of Grand Rapids, MI put in a powerful showing to become the first tandem division winners, recording 108.67 JMC points to defeat three other mixed couples. James Cartwright of Muncie, IN and Richard Lawrence of Lexington, NC repeated as winners in the Male 60-69 and Male 70+ divisions, respectively.
