Final Standings and Who's Who
John Lee Ellis
These are the final standings for NPC'99. Thanks to all participants, and congratulations especially to the 1999 Who's Who!
The NPC'99 Who's Who consists of the top 15% of riders from each division. The above standings indicate in which division(s) a given rider qualified for Who's Who status. At the top of the divisions:
- Woody GRAHAM - Combined (9955 miles)
- Crista BORRAS - Century (8133 miles in 78 centuries)
- Jeff WEIBLE - Standard (5248 miles)
- John Lee ELLIS - Open (7479 miles)
It has been very crowded at the top of the standings this year, closer than in years, often with only a ride or a fraction of a ride separating one person from the next. Also, a number of you are shy of the Who's Who but have put in a goodly number of miles - next year's (2000) UMCA Mileage Challenge should better recognizing your accomplishment.
Some Silly Stats - Your author shares only with Dave Tanner the notoriety of having no (zero) NPC'99 centuries. Jewell Pattee repeated his NPC'98 feat of lowest NPC mileage (98). And Keith Krombel made Who's Who in the Open Division with just one ride (RAAM).
Final Rides - Since our last report, Woody GRAHAM and Ann MULLINS turned in a final ride, the Bond's Crossroads Century on 12/12, and Holly ELMORE reported her multi-century ride to the Southern Bicycle League's get-together down in Miami.
Standard Division - Though we list the standings in order of combined mileage, this is a good opportunity to recognize the top (Who's Who) riders in the NPC's original division, the Standard Division (events of 151 + miles): Jeff WEIBLE (5248), Doug PATTERSON (4791), Barclay BROWN (3786), Woody GRAHAM (3418), Holly ELMORE (3090), Ken CAMPBELL (3031), and Bob HARTING (2999). Half the challenge is finding these longer events (unless you live in California?); the other half of course is riding and finishing them.
A big thanks to John HUGHES, who revitalized the NPC in 1997 (administering all divisions himself, while running the UMCA), ran the Open Division in 1997-1999, and produces and delivers the NPC awards, such as the Who's Who medallions. I understand he still finds time to ride some!
This past year, it has once again been my pleasure to read of your cycling experiences and get to know some of you. Welcome to this year's new entrants, a few of you making big splashes in your first year!
We wish you all a fine new cycling year, full of quality and quantity
miles!
