Christian Krause adds his 6th cross country record

Congratulations to Christian Krause from Denmark, who has had his latest national record officially certified by the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association, adding a North South crossing of Italy to his 5 other cross country records! We wonder where he’s heading next…

1. Denmark South-North (2012)
2. Germany West-East (2014)
3. UK West-East comprising:
   4. Wales West-East and
   5. England West-East
(all set at the same time, 2015)
6. Italy North-South (2016)

See ultracycling.com for details of current and past records across Italy.

DREW’S NOTE

Really good average speed for a long, multi-day ride.

CHRISTIAN’S COMMENTS

During the ride: We were stopped by police 4 times. The first 3 times they were curious to find out what we were doing and smiled and sent us off again quickly. The last police stop took 20 minutes and we got a ticket for 29 Euros for using the flashing lights on the follow vehicles. After 20 minutes we went on and did not get stopped by police again!

PR wise: My crew chief, Sheraz Alam, was also functioning as my PR person and a press release was sent out to the entire media world in Denmark the day before the record attempt. He also published reports and video interviews with me before, during and after the record attempt. He has also arranged a direct line into the Danish National radio station called P3, and that Thursday evening the 1st of September the national radio station broadcast a 3 minutes live interview with me during a sports show. Approximately 1,2 million people listened to that interview and after I got more than 1750,000 visits on my open Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/teamkrauseultracycling and they stayed tuned in for the next 4-5 hours. It was a good feeling knowing, that my crew and I managed to put UMCA and Ultracycling on the air that day – and the following days.

Zuzanna Ciszewska begins a women’s HAM’R attempt

August 1st sees a new lady joining the women’s Highest Annual Mileage Record contingent. Zuzanna Ciszewska, based in London, UK, will be challenging the HAM’R in the same age category as Amanda Coker and aiming to also cycle further than the current Guinness World Record holder, Billie Fleming (Dovey at the time), who covered 29,603.7 miles in 1938. Unlike Amanda however, Zuzanna will be fitting in her miles around her full time job at Rapha Racing (suppliers of performance cycle wear). There will be days where she rides less but is hoping to compensate with big rides at the weekends and during holidays.

Zuzanna cites Billie Fleming and Kajsa Tylen as her inspiration for this record attempt.  Billie rode every day, and achieved her long-standing record on a 3-speed road bike. And if that wasn’t enough she would often finish each day by giving a talk on the health benefits of cycling. Kajsa started her year long challenge at the beginning of this year, under the auspices of Guinness (not the UMCA). Instead of fundraising Kajsa has been asking for followers’ “sweat pledges” as a way of promoting being active.

You can follow Zuzanna on Strava, Facebook or her website.

Philippe Künzler sets new East to West traverse of Switzerland record

DREW’S NOTE

Philippe set the Switzerland East-West record in August 2014 with a time of 23:06. Philippe’s record was then broken by Stéphane Cand in May 2015 with a time of 20:13. Cand used a less mountainous route to log the faster time. Now Philippe reclaims the record with a time of 19:13, also using the flatter route.
