Zuzanna Ciszewska begins a women’s HAM’R attempt

August 1st sees a new lady joining the women’s Highest Annual Mileage Record contingent. Zuzanna Ciszewska, based in London, UK, will be challenging the HAM’R in the same age category as Amanda Coker and aiming to also cycle further than the current Guinness World Record holder, Billie Fleming (Dovey at the time), who covered 29,603.7 miles in 1938. Unlike Amanda however, Zuzanna will be fitting in her miles around her full time job at Rapha Racing (suppliers of performance cycle wear). There will be days where she rides less but is hoping to compensate with big rides at the weekends and during holidays.

Zuzanna cites Billie Fleming and Kajsa Tylen as her inspiration for this record attempt.  Billie rode every day, and achieved her long-standing record on a 3-speed road bike. And if that wasn’t enough she would often finish each day by giving a talk on the health benefits of cycling. Kajsa started her year long challenge at the beginning of this year, under the auspices of Guinness (not the UMCA). Instead of fundraising Kajsa has been asking for followers’ “sweat pledges” as a way of promoting being active.

You can follow Zuzanna on Strava, Facebook or her website.

Philippe Künzler sets new East to West traverse of Switzerland record

DREW’S NOTE

Philippe set the Switzerland East-West record in August 2014 with a time of 23:06. Philippe’s record was then broken by Stéphane Cand in May 2015 with a time of 20:13. Cand used a less mountainous route to log the faster time. Now Philippe reclaims the record with a time of 19:13, also using the flatter route.

Men’s Tandem 24H Record Attempt

This weekend sees the UK National 24 Hour Time Trial Championship – the Mersey Roads 24 Hour race – taking place south of Liverpool in England.

Chris “Hoppo” Hopkinson and Mark “PNuT” Arnold will be attempting to break the current British men’s tandem record of 501.4 miles (set by Peter Goodfellow and his father Rod, in 1991) and the UMCA record of 505.25 miles (set by Rich Fedrigon & Byron Gremley in Kirkland, IL, in 1990). Chris and Mark both have an impressive background in ultra distance time trialling.

Gerry was able to tie two records into one ride because of the proximity of Albany to the Massachusetts western endpoint. This puts Gerry over 100 for records established!

Drew’s Notes

We have had a quick succession of records in Minnesota. At the start of the year, the Minnesota W-E record (18-49) was held by David Evans with 11:36 set in 1994.

Then Luke Kocher made the crossing in 9:36 on April 21, 2016.  Now the record goes to Jacob Olsen with an even faster ride.
